How often do you buy a dress that looks amazing on the model & once you try it on it looks nothing like you thought it would, nothing like it did on the model. The shape is wrong for your body type, it shows all the areas you wanted to hide and the colour makes you look washed out. Yep, I’ve had this happen many times. This doesn’t mean I don’t look great in dresses, just that I look better in different styles and colours to the model. This is exactly the same for health and fitness.
We are all unique & have different shapes, metabolisms, different strengths within our self & most importantly we all have different lifestyles & goals.
Social media is a constant in our everyday life and it is filled with fit people showing us their best side. This leaves us feeling like we need to do exactly what they are doing to look like them, eat exactly the same way they eat to tone up and have a shredded mid section, hit the gym 6 days a week because that is what they say they do. So, off you go on a mission to get fit and healthy following in their footsteps only to fall off the bandwagon within weeks. This leaves us feeling like we are never going to achieve our goal because we just can not sustain ‘their’ healthy lifestyle. We lose confidence within and completely give up with the mentality that we just aren’t meant to be different to what we are now. THIS WAY OF THINKING IS CRAZY!
The most important thing when it comes to your fitness and health is to love the journey. What is it that you love to do? You will lose motivation within weeks if you really do hate the gym environment. Just because your friend loves it and they are getting great results, doesn’t mean this is what you have to do. Just because someone trains 6 days a week, doesn’t mean you need to keep up. The amount of days that you should workout needs to fit into your lifestyle. You need to have a balance between work, family and social life, from there you need to determine how many days a week you can achieve this without feeling overloaded and overwhelmed with a huge to-do list or you will soon lose motivation due to over doing it!
And lastly, find the people that you feel connected to. I have joined various group classes over time and experienced instant connections with certain groups and trainers which made me feel welcomed and happy. I have left classes wanting to go back every day. Others I have felt out of place and uncomfortable. This isn’t to say they were bad trainers or that they didn’t know their stuff, but it was more of a personal thing and lack of connection. Remembering we are all uniquely different which is a wonderful thing. So don’t give up on your goals, group classes or walking into a gym because of a bad experience, maybe try finding a group that suits you, a Personal Trainer you connect to or try a new style of fitness such a boxing, running, swimming, yoga, crossfit – there are so many options out there!
